"As wide as all the world, great, high and unbelievably white in the sun, was the square top of Mount Kilimanjaro."
- Ernest Hemingway, The Snows of Kilimanjaro.
Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, has been considered as the "mountain of all superlatives" because it represents many different ideas and images within East Africa. It is the highest African summit and tallest freestanding mountain in the world with its volcanic base of 3885sq.km. The Kilimanjaro is beautiful both from afar and close up and Original Tanzania is proud to take visitors to this unique site and guide them into its changing landscapes.
This historic site of Mt Kilimanjaro (evolved over 2-3 million years) is composed of 3 volcanoes: Kibo, the highest (5895m), Mawenzi (5149m) and Shira, the oldest (3840m). It is located north of Tanzania near the town of Moshi just 330km south of the Equator, and is a protected area. Whether you are a hiking expert, a first time challenger, a nature enthusiast, an adventurer or a bit of all of the above, Mt Kilimanjaro invites challenge of both mind and body to conquer its highest point at Uhuru Peak- which scrapes the sky at almost 6km high.
You may hopefully realise from our website that we are fascinated with ecosystems and the environment and Mt Kilimanjaro offers the opportunity to experience a diverse landscape with underlying natural activities that shape the paths as you walk. The mountain's pathways are as strikingly beautiful as they are varied and diverse. On the lowland slopes, much of the mountain is farmland, with coffee, banana, cassava, and maize crops that are grown for subsistence and also to sell. Once inside the park, thick lowland forest covers the lower altitudes and breaks into alpine meadows once the air begins to thin. Near the peak, the landscape is barren with rocks, as well as ice being a predominant feature; all the time enjoying breathtaking views with the climax of a sunrise that stretches further than the eye can see.
We have seen some indescribable sunrises on the top of Mt Kilimanjaro and want to share this experience with you. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is a real highlight to lift the spirits and step outside of your comfort zone. Remember your attitude is what can determine your altitude.
