SOCIAL / COMMUNITY AND ETHICAL TOURISM
We aim to highlight and promote Tanzanian Talent and focus on people's abilities. There are many organisations whose social projects revolve around poverty, disease and addressing the issues of society - gender, education, health etc. As these type of projects are so widely broadcast across the world, there is a constant image of 'hopelessness' in Africa. Tanzania suffers this image aswell.
As a result of this there has actually become an industry built around poverty. For example, children who may have parents are placed in orphanages where support can be sought from international volunteers with money. This is not sustainable and doesn't help other projects that may be local and trying to help families stay together! Also, many countries across the world have social problems but we don't find Africans coming to sort them out. The intention is not to simplify the situation but just to emphasise the need to travel and do your own research and tell your own experiences.
In line with this we support initiatives relating to Ethical Tourism (Tourism Concern). This is about promoting forms of tourism that bring real benefits to local people and includes Porter’s Rights, Indigenous People’s rights and raising public awareness regarding “Slum Tourism” and exploitation. However you spend your money and time with us; either through purchasing from the Original Shop; travelling with us or simply spending your money in local businesses whilst in Tanzania; you are contributing towards changing the view of tourism and understanding that people really are the same across the world. Anybody wants the opportunity to work in a fair system, be rewarded for what they do and have opportunities. This is more difficult if relying on handouts and seeing others invest and have more influence in your own country due to unfair economics and a history of outside interference.
With Original Tanzania, it is about bringing a long lasting experience to people, not just touring and saying goodbye. We hope you will join us.
